Week 7: Vista Panthers 46, Poway Titans 42

Coming into Friday night, the Poway Titans and Vista Panthers were part of a three-way tie for first place in the Palomar League, but since Rancho Bernardo had a non-conference game this week, tonight’s matchup decided which team took solo ownership of the No. 1 spot.

Despite Poway dominating the majority of the game, Vista was able to convert on their final drive, squeaking by with a 46-42 victory.

Josh Butler was Poway’s go-to guy the first half, reaping in a hat trick performance to put the Titans up a quick 21-0 to start the game.

Poway held the momentum the entire first half and built on it going into halftime after Andrew Wiesley squeaked out a 30-yard touchdown pass to DJ Owens at the buzzer.

Poway was up a comfortable 35-13 at the half.

Just when it looked like the Titans were going to walk away with the victory, the Panthers decided to make it interesting.

Down by 23 points with only a quarter and a half to play, Travis Bennet and Brent Lawson took matters in their own hands, scoring back-to-back-back touchdowns to bring the game within three.

With three minutes left on the clock, the Panthers received the ball one last time, which would end up being the final drive of the night.

Vista was able to gain a few yards here and there, but it wasn’t until the Panthers utilized their fullback where they began to put poetry in motion.

With less than a minute on the clock, David Flores was able to bulldoze his way through Poway’s defensive line, taking the pigskin 42 yards down the field to put the ball on the Titan 10-yard line.

As time was expiring, Desmond Taua took it three yards to the house, securing a Homecoming victory for the Vista Panthers.

Vista (4-2, 2-0) will travel to Del Norte (2-4, 0-2), which is searching for their first Palomar League win of the season, next Friday for Week 8 of the Prep Pigskin Report. Poway (4-3, 1-1) will host Mt. Carmel (2-4, 0-1), which will be coming off a bye week.
