Week 8: Montgomery Aztecs 27, Sweetwater Red Devils 0
The Montgomery Aztecs came into Friday night’s matchup with the Sweetwater Red Devils standing at 5-1, which is their best record since 1982. Head coach Freddy Dunkle has loved the improvement his team made from last year – which was his first season as head coach – to now.
Dunkle also loved his team’s performance Friday night, as it beat the Red Devils, 27-0. Junior quarterback Alexander Dixie, who has played well all year, led the Aztecs with three total touchdowns on the night.
Dixie opened up the scoring in the first quarter when he hit junior wide receiver Zach Pearson on a nice slant route which ended in a 70-yard scoring play. Then in the second quarter, Dixie used his wheels to burst for a 29-yard touchdown run.
At halftime, the Aztecs led 14-0.
In the second half, the Red Devils had a handful of chances to score but the Montgomery defense didn’t fold.
Junior safety Benjamin Larsen secured an interception for the Aztecs, which resulted in a 10-yard rushing touchdown for Jaheem Williams.
Sweetwater’s defense did manage to intercept quarterback Alexander Dixie two times, but the Red Devils were unable to capitalize.
The Red Devils will face off against Mar Vista next week while Montgomery is at San Ysidro.
