Week 8 North County Game of the Week: Torrey Pines Falcons 13, Mission Hills Grizzlies 7
Mission Hills played what their coaches call their best game of the year defensively holding Torrey Pines to a field goal in the 1st half. Second half Ron Gladnick’s team came out like gangbuster driving the length of the field before senior running back Mac Bingham scored from five yards out for their only touchdown of the game.
After that big plays in the pass game from Torrey Pines senior quarterback Jason Heine to Senior WR/DB Luke Mikolajewski led to another field goal. And Mikolajewski may have made the biggest play of all when he broke up what likely could have a been a game winning touchdown from junior quarterback Joey Armentrout to junior Wide receiver Quinton Hadnot with less than a minute left.
Preview: The Prep Pigskin Report takes us to #1 Torrey Pines (6-0, 2-0) host Avocado League rival Mission Hills (2-4, 1-1) at Ed Burke Field.
These two teams played twice last season, once in the regular season with the Grizzlies winning by one point at Torrey Pines, the second time again at Torrey Pines in the CIF Open Division Semi-Finals and again Mission was a winner by three.
The Falcons look like the team to beat this season, senior RB Mac Bingham is tough to tackle, and doesn’t go down on first contact. IN front of him is an athletic offensive line highlighted by Cal bound Brian Driscoll. Defensively the Falcons give up just 14 yards a game.
Mission Hills has a tough transition in the Post Jack Tuttle era. The Grizzlies have faced some tough competition in their 1st few games of the season. But also had surprising loss at Oceanside. They run a two quarterback system with junior QB’s Joey Armentrout and senior QB Daniel McMahon. They do have playmakers on the team, like junior WR Joe Smith and senior tight end Jadan Washington.
The Grizzlies will have to play a perfect game if they plan to beat the Falcon this year. Highlights of this game and every other one played in San Diego County will be on Friday night at 11:00 PM on the Prep Pigskin Report. You can also follow me on Twitter for live scoring updates @Rick Willis99.
