Ramona Bulldogs/Fallbrook Warriors: NO CONTEST
The Ramona Bulldogs and Fallbrook Warriors had their game cut way short after Mother Nature refused to cooperate on Friday night.
The two teams each got one possession: Fallbrook had a three-and-out, while Ramona was able to push the ball down the field and score a goalline touchdown. Before the extra point was kicked, a lightning strike lit up the sky behind the goal post Ramona was set to kick towards.
Referees pulled the coaches aside to tell them that the game would be delayed for thirty minutes. They would have resumed play after that delay if there were no more lightning strikes within 10 miles of the stadium. After about 15 minutes, another lightning strike made the clock reset. The announcer said that if lightning struck one more time in the 30 minutes, the game would be called.
That’s exactly what happened, and the game was suspended after only two possessions in. Ramona was never even able to kick their extra point. It is yet to be seen if the two teams will make up this game. The CIF is right around the corner, so we’ll keep an eye out if they make the game a no-contest that won’t affect their records.
Next week, Ramona will host Rancho Buena Vista; while Fallbrook while host San Pasqual.
PREVIEW: The Ramona High Bulldogs (5-2) will look to stay atop the Valley League standings this Friday as they head to Fallbrook High (2-5) to take on the Warriors in a conference battle.
Ramona is coming off of a big 42-14 win against Escondido, a game that saw senior quarterback Derek Diamond throw for four touchdowns, and catch another. The team hopped out to a quick 35-0 lead in the first quarter and didn’t look back. The Bulldogs have been extremely successful at home this season, going 4-0 on their own turf. Their lone two losses have been on the road, so they’ll be looking for their first away win of the season against Fallbrook. Look for Diamond to continue to be efficient with his opportunities against a Fallbrook team that has struggled defensively at times this season. He’s a true triple-threat that can pass, run and catch the ball at any given moment. On the other side of the ball, keep an eye out for senior defensive back Cameron Necochea. He’s been one of Ramona’s top ball-hawks this season, and had a pick-six last week. That gave him three scores on the day, after catching two touchdowns on offense.
Fallbrook will be fresh off of a bye week this Friday, and will be looking to get their feet back under them after losing their previous three games. Senior quarterback has been the conductor of the Warriors offense so far this season, and has four touchdowns in the past three games. That includes a nice 14-yard scamper to the end zone a few weeks ago against Serra. The Warriors defense will depend on their guys up front to try and slow down Ramona’s proficient attack. Look for senior defensive ends Joseph Portillo and Dominik Torrescano to do their best to set the edge this Friday.
