Week 8: Rancho Bernardo Broncos 14, Westview Wolverines 13

The Rancho Bernardo Broncos were able to keep their win streak alive on Friday night, scraping by the Westview Wolverines, 14-13.

After a scoreless first quarter between the two teams, the Broncos were able to score first. The points coming on a 13-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Zeke Payne to junior wide receiver Jonathan Cousins.

Rancho Bernardo took that 7-0 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the half, Westview needed something to give it some momentum. Coach Kyle Williams took a page out of the Saints’ Sean Payton’s book and called an onside kick at the start of the third quarter.

That call proved to be big-time, as the Wolverines recovered the ball and began moving the ball downfield. Westview capped the drive with a score to tie things up at 7-all, coming on junior running back CJ Latimer’s 17-yard touchdown run.

After sacking Westview’s quarterback to force a punt, the Broncos were able to get a few first downs to end the third quarter. That momentum carried on into the fourth, as they continued to push the ball into Wolverine territory.

That’s when Payne found senior wideout Caleb Armstrong on an out-route, and he took it 38 yards to the house to take a 14-7 lead.

The Wolverines had just over five minutes to answer, and their offense was up to the task.

Quarterback Tyler Overbo found receiver EJ Ong for huge third-down conversion to keep the drive alive around midfield. The offense eventually got within a few yards of the goal line.

Westview called Latimer’s name again from nine yards out, and he delivered and found the end zone.

With the score now 14-13 in favor of Rancho Bernardo, the Wolverines decided to go for the win. The Broncos weren’t having it and batted down the jump pass to seal the win.

Rancho Bernardo (5-2) won its fifth straight game and will face Mt. Carmel at home next week. Westview (2-5) will head to Vista High to take on Panthers.
