Week 9: Mira Mesa Marauders 62, University City Centurions 26
For Week 9 of the PPR, the Mira Mesa Marauders (1-6) paid a visit to University City High (1-6), where both teams fought for their second win of the season.
The Marauders’ defense started off hot with an interception by defensive lineman Ethan Nelson, which set up Elijah Thomas for a 13-yard rush, followed by his first touchdown of the night, going 20 yards to make it 7-0.
The Centurions respond right away with a 22-yard touchdown of their own from Gunnar Gray to Abdullah Sinjab to close the gap to 7-6.
With 42 seconds left in the first quarter, Marauder quarterback Alex Needham, a freshman, sent a 35-yard touchdown to Tajon Evans to make it 14-6.
Once the second quarter approached, the Marauders began to take charge and increased their gap as their defense began to sharpen up.
Said Salim tipped off Gunnar Gray, a senior, and Caleb Vanta picked the interception and took it back into Marauder territory.
Needham and his receivers performed great chemistry as the freshman completed 5-of-6 passes, totaling 170 yards and two touchdowns.
With the powerful, driving performance of Thomas, a senior, and Tajon Evans, a sophomore, the Marauders ended the first half with a lead of 42-14. Thomas finished the first half with three touchdowns and 142 rushing yards.
The Centurions got refreshed for the second half and let the Marauders know that they weren’t giving up that easy. Gray, the quarterback, made a 44-yard pass-and-run touchdown to Fred Jenkins, closing the deficit to 42-20.
Thomas took charge and racked up his total yardage to 249 yards on 29 carries. Thomas finished with a game-high of five touchdowns.
The Marauders finished with a final score of 62-26 and the Centurions fell to a 1-7 overall record.
Next Friday, the Centurions host their Senior Night versus the La Jolla Vikings (4-4) at 6:30 p.m. where they will play their last home game for the season.
Mira Mesa (2-6) will be on the road once again to face the Morse Tigers (5-3) at 6:30 p.m.
