Serra Conquistadors 46, Crawford Colts 0
The Will C. Crawford Colts travel to Juniper Serra highschool to take on the Conquistadors, aka The Q-DAWGS.
The Matchup: Crawford (3-4) vs Serra (4-3)
Friday night was Homecoming for the Conquistadors, and when this was scheduled no one could foresee mother nature sticking her nose into Q-DAWGS homecoming plans. With several games around the county were either canceled or re-scheduled, lighting was definitely the main conversation around the water-cooler at KUSI. This was the Prep Pigskin Report’s first show in 20 years that showcased this much lightning.
The natural lighting wasn’t the most impressive thing in this contest Friday night. Earlier this season Serra Head coach, Dru Smith found lightning in a bottle when he announced Jr. QB Timothy Zebrowski would be the starting QB for the Q-DAWGS this season, and friday night we all saw why. The talented shot-caller for the Q-DAWGS threw 6 touchdowns in the first half before the game was called due to mother natures fury.
From the opening kickoff, this game appeared to be all Serra. On the first drive, the Q-DAWGS marched right down the field and scored. History would repeat itself five more times in the first half. The Colt defense had no answer for the shifty QB. Meanwhile, the Colt offense seemed out of sorts, QB Kevin Luong looked impressive, he stood in the pocket and took some big shots and delivered the ball to his receivers…one problem…I counted at least 9 dropped passes in the first half. His wide receivers weren’t helping him by dropping passes. The Colt offense sputtered in the running game as well. Crawford never seemed to get into a rhythm, and failed to get into the end zone in the first half.
This game is a FINAL. No make-ups, no-reschedules.
Your FINAL Serra 46 – Crawford – 0
Crawford Head Coach: Matt Marquez
After Matt Marquez took over as head coach for the Colts, it’s been a bit of a challenge for the Colts to adapt to the new personality of the team. The Colts are 2-3 since Marquez has taken over. Crawford comes into this game still trying to figure out their team personality after the coaching change. It’s not a question of ability, rather staying true to their teams’ personality. It doesn’t appear they have gelled yet under the new head coach. The 2 tough losses came against quality opponents, Coronado and Scripps Ranch. The scores of those games don’t exactly reflect the play or strength of the Colt team. Costly turnovers and some crucial mental mistakes have let the scores get out of hand in those games. The Colts have been in the fight for most of these games. The Sophomore QB, Kevin Luong, has a big arm and stands in at 6′ 200lbs, a formidable sized QB. Senior Bobby Driver is hard to cover as a WR, and on defense is a lock-down corner.
Serra Head Coach: Dru Smith
At one point in the season, the Q-DAWGS were 0-3. Fast forward a month, and oh how things have changed. Dru Smith’s Q-Dawgs led by Junior QB Tim Zebrowski, have turned things around since then. They have rattled off 3 straight wins, and after last weeks forfeit from Clairemont, the Q-DAWGS are sitting 4-3 overall and 1-0 in league play. In the last 3 wins the Q-DAWGS have outscored their opponents 146-13. Their offense is rolling and it appears that the defense is starting to figure things out. With the improvements made on the defensive side of the ball for the Q-DAWGS. the Senior Linebackers are good at stopping the run and forcing teams to be more one dimensional and pass the ball more. Timothy Zabrowski is a PLAYMAKER, this kid simply makes plays and keeps putting points on the board. Sophomore RB Dustin Ellison is the real deal, the kid has speed and power.
I expect the Q-DAWGS to try to establish the run early with Sophomore RB Dustin Ellison. Ellison will have some success as he is a tough RB to bring down, defenders are not tackling this kid with arm tackles. This may expose the Crawford LB’s ability to shed blocks and team tackle. Once the run has been established, I expect the mobile Zebrowski to start taking shots down the field opposite the Colts lockdown cover Bobby Driver. Crawford will try to pass the ball early and often, and maybe playing catch-up. In response, the Q-DAWG defensive line will bring pressure, and the lack of size on the Colt line will result in some big shots on the QB.
