Mount Miguel Matadors 41, El Cajon Valley Braves 0
On Friday night, Mount Miguel celebrated their homecoming and the El Cajon Valley Braves tried to take that away from them. Unfortunately however, they were no match for the Matadors even in the rain.
The game began with the Braves kicking off and the Matadors receiving. Just a couple minutes into the game, Jacob Laverdiere of the Matadors threw a 46 yard touchdown to Mikey Avant. Shortly afterwards, Mount Miguel regained possession, and the El Cajon Valley defense really brought something to the table. The rest of the first quarter consisted of both teams going back and forth.
The second quarter opened with Laverdiere throwing for another touchdown. This time to Dominic Morales for 54 yards. The Matadors regained possession soon after and Laverdiere threw a 36 yard touchdown pass to Jadd Mallard. When the Matadors had the ball once more they made their way to the 1 yard line. Senior running back Larry Yzaguirre then made his way into the end zone closing the first half and making the score 27-0 at halftime.
The second half opened with El Cajon Valley receiving the kick-off. They made their way halfway up the field, but that would be short-lived when Jadd Mallard of the Matadors intercepted a pass and ran it back for a 58 yard touchdown. The final touchdown of the night would be Laverdiere throwing a 16 yard touchdown to Erik Graham. During the last few seconds of the 4th quarter, Joe Malone of the Braves tried to keep the ball and run it in himself but fell short of just a few yards.
Despite the rainfall, the Matadors were able to celebrate their homecoming game with a win and now improve to 3-5.
Week 9 of the PPR is here which means the regular season is almost over and it’s almost time for playoffs. Until then, one game that the Red Jackets will be attending will be the El Cajon Valley Braves facing the Mount Miguel Matadors.
This is the 2-5 Matadors’ third league game so far this season. Last week, they took an unfortunate loss against rival Monte Vista, 35-14. Despite the loss, Mount Miguel is in good hands with their sophomore quarterback Jacob Laverdiere.
Last week, Laverdiere threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns. Laverdiere has even achieved 2,038 passing yards for the entire season. Mount Miguel is currently ranked 15th in Division III.
As for the Braves, they have had some ups and downs this season. They currently sit at a record of 0-8. However, their offense doesn’t seem too bad.
Senior quarterback Atlantis Eidejus has thrown for 225 yards this season while sophomore running back Damarius Hyde has rushed for 199 yards. The Braves are currently ranked at 17th in Division IV.
The game will be held Friday, October 12th at 7 p.m. at Mount Miguel High School. If you miss the game or just want to watch the highlights, you can always catch the Prep Pigskin Report at 11:00 p.m. on KUSI. You can also follow @redjacketarmy on Twitter for scoring updates.
