Week 8: The Bishop’s School Knights 20, Orange Glen Patriots 0
Yet another week of CIF football is here, and any fans of prep football dismayed about the upcoming end to the season can instead focus their energy and attention on the fantastic Coastal League matchup coming from Orange Glen, California. This week, the Orange Glen Patriots will host The Bishop’s School Knights under the Friday night lights. This Week 8 matchup will pit a rolling and exceptionally talented 5-1 Patriots squad against a powerful Bishop’s squad with a 3-3 record that feels a little misleading given their 51-19 win over nemesis La Jolla Country Day last week.
This has been a season of highs and lows for the Bishops faithful, beginning with the loss of star quarterback Tyler Buchner on just the fourth play of the season. Buchner, a very highly-touted college football prospect, was expected to be the driving force behind the Knights offense. Replacing a player of that caliber is never easy.
It appears the Knights have found a worthy (if a bit unlikely) candidate in senior Dominic Haley.
Haley, a defensive standout and offensive lineman for the Knights last year, took over the pigskin-slinging duties just two weeks ago against Monte Vista. So far, it’s hard to argue with the results: 437 yards and six touchdowns over just two games, and another 200 yards on the ground.
Haley hasn’t been without help, however. Clay Petry, Amaan Banks, Gabe Thomas, and Clarence Freeman IV make up a core group that split the majority of the receiving and rushing duties. The Knights utilize their remaining athletes very well and are a constant threat for explosive plays.
The only issue? Orange Glen is just as impressive in many ways.
The Patriots certainly prefer their running game. They notched just five passing attempts to their forty-three rushing attempts in their 28-19 win over Classical Academy last week. The only game in which Orange Glen faced a significant deficit, a 34-17 loss to San Pasqual, saw a much more balanced play-selection, but they still average more than thirty carries per game.
When you have a running back performing the way Cael Patterson is this season, it’s hard to blame them.
Patterson has 150+ rushing-yard performances in every single game he’s played in this season, and only one of those games finished under the 200-yard mark. Moray Steward, Dylan Ewing, and Ruben Ramirez put in solid work every week as change-of-pace backs and give Patterson a needed rest throughout each game. Fans should expect to see the Patriots bring the same hard-nosed ground attack this week as well.
This should be an entertaining, back-and-forth spectacle, and anyone wanting in on the action need only show up at Orange Glen High School at 7pm this Friday. Alternatively, tune into KUSI’s Prep Pigskin Report at 11pm for the final score and highlights!
