Wife killed, husband injured when hit by car in El Cajon

EL CAJON (CNS) – An elderly woman was killed, and her husband was injured, when they were struck by vehicles while crossing an El Cajon street on New Year’s Eve, police said Thursday.

The incident occurred at 8:01 p.m. in the 300 block of West Washington Avenue, El Cajon Police Lt. Randy Soulard said.

“Police and paramedics responding to several 911 calls found the couple had both been struck by separate vehicles in the westbound lanes of West Washington while crossing the street in a northerly direction,” Soulard said. “Both victims were transported to a local hospital where the woman was later pronounced dead from serious injuries. Her husband was treated for minor injuries and released.”

Rosie Mondejar, 80, was killed and her husband, Merlin Mondejar was injured.

Soulard said the drivers involved in the collision, who were not identified, remained on the scene and cooperated in the police investigation.

“Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the incident,” Soulard said.

El Cajon Police issued a reminder to pedestrians to always cross at intersections with crosswalks controlled by traffic signals. When walking at night, pedestrians should also wear bright or reflective colors more visible to drivers.
