Woman accused of hitting Fiesta Island cyclists to face hearing
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – A woman who allegedly drove into a group of cyclists on Fiesta Island while on drugs is scheduled to face a mental competency hearing Wednesday.
49-year-old Theresa Owens is facing charges of driving under the influence of a controlled substance and methamphetamine possession.
The competency hearing comes on the heels of December report that stated Owens was mentally fit to stand trial, but after failing to assist her attorney at trial, a second doctor expressed concern regarding her mental makeup.
On August 12, Owens allegedly drove the wrong way on a one-way street, hitting 10 bike riders head-on with her car. According to witnesses, Owens began behaving erratically, giving the impression she might have been on drugs.
Upon her arrival at the hospital, a baggie of methamphetamine was discovered on her person.
