Woman allegedly plotted hit on estranged husband in Carlsbad

CARLSBAD (KUSI) — A Carlsbad woman and a man who worked at a gun range in Oceanside, were arrested Thursday for a allegedly planning and shooting the woman’s estranged husband last week, prompting the lock down of a Carlsbad neighborhood.

Diana Lovejoy, 43, and Weldon McDavid Jr., 49, were booked into county jail on suspicion of attempted murder, conspiracy, assault with a deadly weapon and assault causing great bodily injury, according to police. Lovejoy took marksmanship lessons at the gun range where McDavid worked.

The victim, whose name has been withheld, suffered a bullet wound to his side in an access road off Avenida Soledad about 11:15 p.m. Sept. 1. He was hospitalized in stable condition.

Detectives said they believed Lovejoy and McDavid planned the crime and that the latter called the victim, arranged to meet him in the alley and opened fire on him with a rifle while hiding in a patch of bushes, police said.

The shooting prompted the closure of Rancho Santa Fe Rd. from northbound Camino Junipero to southbound Melrose Dr. in Carlsbad just after 1 a.m. Friday as police and a SWAT team searched the area for suspects.

The motive for the shooting was not disclosed.
