Woman assaulted during robbery attempt at City College

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Witnesses to a robbery that left a 19-year-old woman with minor injuries at San Diego City College Thursday chased the suspected perpetrator and held him for police.

The alleged thief — who also is a student at the college — confronted the victim shortly before 11 a.m., shoved her against a wall outside a campus math/social sciences building near the corner of 16th and C streets and stole her purse, according to San Diego Community College District officials.

Several other students ran after the 54-year-old suspect, tackled him and subdued him, the district’s Jack Beresford said. Campus police took the man into custody.

Paramedics took the victim to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest.

Preliminary reports that the suspect stabbed the victim with a screwdriver proved unfounded, according to Beresford, who said district policy prohibited him from disclosing the suspect’s name.
