Woman declared brain-dead after Downtown shooting
SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A 57-year-old woman who was shot at point-blank range in the Gaslamp District — allegedly by her 83-year-old husband — was declared brain dead, authorities said Monday.
Deborah Gotell was declared brain dead late Sunday morning, 21 hours after being shot on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Broadway, according to San Diego police and the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.
Witnesses to the afternoon shooting told reporters that Gotell's husband, Joseph, shot her once in the head, then stood over her and fired again. A daughter, Nefra Croom, identified the couple to the media.
According to jail records, Joseph Gotell was being held without bail in the Vista jail on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder. He was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon.
Police have yet to offer a possible motive for the shooting.
