Woman steps on gas instead of brake, hits friend and her grandchildren

PACIFIC BEACH (CNS) – A 75-year-old woman stepped on her car's gas pedal instead of the brake, mowing into her elderly friend and that woman's three grandchildren at a Pacific Beach frozen yogurt shop, a police officer said Saturday.

The driver was on her way to pick up her 76-year-old friend and her grandchildren, ages 16, 14 and 11, who were waiting on the patio of Yogurt on the Rocks at 1886 Garnet Ave. shortly before 6:30 p.m. Friday, San Diego police Officer David Stafford said.

She mistook the pedals and drove onto the sidewalk, striking all four, Stafford said.

The woman sustained fractured ribs, a back injury and a punctured lung, and was taken to a hospital to be treated, according to the officer.

The three children sustained minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for evaluations, Stafford said.
