Wrong-way driver causes fatal crash on I-805 in University City
LA JOLLA (KUSI) — A wrong-way driver caused a fiery multi-vehicle crash on northbound I-805 at La Jolla Village Drive in the University City area, killing three people, according to California Highway Patrol.
The three-vehicle crash occurred just after 4:30 p.m., causing multiple people to be ejected from vehicles and causing all three vehicle to catch on fire.
All lanes on northbound I-805 at La Jolla Village Drive have been closed, prompting heavy traffic in the area. A Sig-Alert has been issued in the area of the crash.
California Highway Patrol, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, and San Diego Police Department officials are currently at the scene.
The death toll of the wreck remained uncertain as of 6 p.m., though authorities believed that upwards of three people perished in the damaged vehicles, two of which wound up ablaze.
At least one person was transported to a trauma center with serious injuries, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
It is unclear how many injuries or fatalities were caused from the crash.
