WWII Veteran Tom Rice honored at the American Legion #416

ENCINITAS (KUSI) – Wednesday night, friends, family, fans and fellow veterans gather at the American Legion #416 in Encinitas to honor World War Two veteran Tom Rice.

Part of the 101st Airborne, Staff Sargent rice helped American troops gain a foothold against German forces when he parachuted behind enemy lines during the Invasion of Normandy in July 1944.

His heroics and those of hundreds of other Americans on D-Day helped bring about the end of WWII.

Earlier this year, the 98-year-old Rice and other fellow veterans took part in a recreation of that parachute jump over Normandy. That jump and the original jump during D-Day are moments he shared tonight at the American Legion with KUSI.

Joining Rice was fellow WWII veteran Admiral Don Shelton. Shelton, also 98-years-old, presented Rice with a framed photo of the parachute hero.
